Most of us have some type of video entertainment package, be it Prime, Netflix, Pluto TV, or Apple TV.. and even with all those options – isn’t it weird that its still hard to find something good to watch?

Well, I discovered Widow’s Bay – a total gem of a show – quite by accident. I saw a flash on the screen of actor Matthew Rhys (who played Philip Jennings in the hit series “The Americans”) and found this new series and I had to check it out! It is available on Apple TV!

The series centers around a New England Island that has a dark past and the genre of the show is a unique mixture of comedy and horror, which sounds like it wouldn’t work but it turns out to be like bacon and eggs in this case.

I’m currently on episode 3 “The Inaugural Swim” and I love it, the character Tom Loftis – which is the mayor of Widow’s Bay is such an awesome dude. I can total relate to that guy, he is trying to lead and pull in one direction and everything and everyone seems to be pulling against him but you have to root for the guy. He’s got guts and moxie which is in short supply these days. The guy is trying his hardest to work on the relationship with his son, and also deal with all the issues that arise in the town – not an easy feat for anyone. Sometimes kids can drive you crazy, how can you love someone so much when they can push your buttons like that? My kids drive me crazy but I don’t ever want to lose them or see them hurt. That’s what love is I guess. In the series, Tom is alone with his son thus far and with no mother in the picture, there is friction between them.

Its the perfect show to me, it is so funny, the one character that really pushes against Mayor Tom is Wyck, Wyck goes scorched earth at the most inconvenient moments, and the interplay between the characters is so good. Another good strong character is Patricia, her and Tom’s relationship is complicated. She seems to have a thing for him and the dialogue between them is pure comedic gold. Patricia was drilling Tom with statements and questions – man, did I laugh.

There is also a matter of competence, in the town of 3,000, the mayors office seems to be a weak link – communication, motivation in the office is low. Tom wants the town to grow and others in the town want to keep the status quo.

It has been a long time since I’ve watched a series that really really clicked with me across the board, it checked all my boxes and is keeping me coming back for more. Its so good that I don’t want to watch it too fast and burn through all the episodes – plus I only watch at evenings when it’s dark outside.

It’s hard for me to describe exactly what it is about this show I find so compelling, it’s funny but edgy, scary but intriguing. After a stressful week of work, cleaning at home, volunteering at church, helping my daughter and son-in-law with different house issues – I’m done like dinner 😂. I need to shake it all off, kick back and let it all go. We push ourselves hard and it isn’t healthy to take that too far.

I know the real people out there feel me – on Friday & Saturday evenings I just want to chill, turn off the lights, get some fast food or Lay’s ketchup chips and watch a show that entertains me, makes me laugh, and also thrills me with the unexpected.
