Oddbits Youtube Channel

I created a YouTube channel about a year ago called Oddbits, its a collection of personal video’s & couple of playlists.

We had a retro video game channel before that with a really good subscriber count but the impossible happened, (and I don’t even know why) but I lost a large part of my taste for video games. I still play the occasional game but very little overall.

All my adult life I’ve been drawn to weird things you could say, nostalgic clips of old TV shows, old music videos, old books that I read as a boy. I remember my grandpa Aron Janz (brother of Nick Janz – who founded the old Janz game farm/Zoo from Grunthal) used to have a room with a train track, his first paycheck mounted on the wall (for like $1.53 cents), a toy plane on a string that used to fly round and round, old cap guns – and at the time, I didn’t understand why he had them, in my thoughts I was thinking what is he doing with all this stuff, I mean he is just an old man. But honestly I loved him dearly, more than he’ll ever know.

My grandpa was born on August 9th, 1918 in Pavlodar; a city in northeastern Kazakhstan which was closely associated with Russia – they actually needed permission by going to Moscow and waited for 2 months in order to be granted leave – in the 1930s they arrived in Grunthal, Manitoba. This is a rare picture of my grandpa holding me when I was almost 3 years old.

What I didn’t understand was (like the song) there was the boy inside the man. There is still a remanent of the past, an ember or perhaps a snapshot of the child he used to be, still encapsulated in that room. I remember after he died, the family divided things and cleaned out all the items out of that room, I got his cap guns but I hated that day because we took apart his room and took away a part of him in my eyes.

The Oddbits channel is my version of that room created for myself & for others… When I was really little (9 or 10 years) old, I had a tiny crystal radio (schematic below) from Radio Shack. For those that don’t know, a crystal radio doesn’t take batteries, it is powered by the band it is tuned too – it literally vibrates, so it has limited volume, but as long as the station is broadcasting and the radio is turned on; it will keep playing music – mini me thought that was so cool, in fact I still do. So I saw it fitting, that a radio is the background for each video in the CBS Radio playlist – that is why. I also loved comic books so I created a mini comic cover for the first 26 episodes of that playlist.

I love mysterious and dark stories, for me they captivate or one could say, activate my imagination… I love listening to stories where I don’t know what is going to happen next and I get so worried for the main character that sometimes I have to turn it off, I can’t keep listening; as a child I developed a massive fear of confrontation and emotionally unstable situations, most of the time I feel very little emotions about anything; and when confronted by extreme emotion (or at least extreme to me) I don’t know how to deal with it. So listening to the stories I love are very hard for me to listen too. I have a playlist on Oddbits called the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre and it has old stories of suspense.

I also have a playlist of my favorite music… it’s a mixture of Christian and dance/rock music. If you look at my last post on Oddbits, there is a description of the first 26 episodes of the CBS Radio Mystery playlist, each picture correlates to an episode – I hope you take the time to listen!

If this is my last post in 2025, I wish all of you a Merry Christmas, and a blessed 2026. Forget about Santa – he isn’t real and children should never be led into a lie – deception away from Christ is always evil, no matter how pretty it is… Jesus Christ is the reason for Christmas, so lets hear a happy birthday for the King of Kings!!!

Sincerely, Jason
