Watchers Audiobook Review
Warning – there will be spoilers so beware!
I just finished the audiobook Watchers by Dean Koontz on Audible. if you’ve been following my posts – you’ll seen that I’ve been impressed with it.. it averages a 4.7/5 stars, and has a runtime of 16h 31min.
Here is my final take on it, the voice used to narrate the book is great, as good as any I’ve heard. The story makes logical sense and has comedy and heartfelt moments for sure. As far as realism goes, the genetic manipulation is very advanced – far beyond what we can do even now, but in these books technology catches a massive breakthrough, like catching lightning in a bottle.
I find some of Travis’s quirks to be unrealistic, no Delta Force operator would have missed the assassin near the end of the book, or hugged Nora until the threat is neutralized. A good operator can keep his emotions very separate from the situation at hand, and even the most volatile situation becomes structured and non emotional. The training they go through drives muscle memory and routine, to the point where they rarely miss and even injury doesn’t keep them from hitting their targets. *I should also say that selecting an Uzi would be crazy.. a Heckler & Koch (HK) assault rifle would make way more sense… like Travis would pick a “spray and pray” weapon, and allow Nora & the dog to be between him and the outsider with a weapon he can’t completely control – but I guess it makes for a good story from an action perspective.*
I was kind of hoping the stalker was gonna get prison for life, I don’t remember exactly what happened to him as far as sentence, but if that guy never saw the light of day again, I’d be cool with that.
Travis and Nora fall and love and he is a great man for her, he wants to make her life better and he is crazy about her.. Nora has completely come out of the shell created by her aunt over a lifetime of shielding. It looks like the Cornell curse is finally broken.
The ending of the book (I won’t reveal that here) is perfect, this audio book was a wonderful story, for me personally the fact that the dog (Einstein) has a human level intellect but is completely obsessed with Mickey Mouse.. that is so dang cute. There is something about the love a dog can give, that is… pure.
Every month with Audible (those guys should be paying me 😊) – you get a free credit, the next audiobook I’m listening to is The Passage by Justin Cronin. I used my monthly credit to purchase it and it is 36h 48mins long.
Have a great week,
Jason
