I just totally love it. 😁

We use Linode virtual machines (VM’s) to run many different services – I also use Linode personally as well. In fact I just transferred a VM from my personal account to my work account. Normally doing something of that nature is a massive hassle and requires DNS changes, etc. but Linode makes it a dream to transfer a service to another account.

Here is a list of some of the projects that you can do with Linode…. this is not exhaustive by any means; but it is a good start!

1. Build Your Own Private PaaS (Heroku Alternative)

The Project: Install Coolify or CapRover on a standard Ubuntu Linode instance.

Why do it: Instead of paying steep premiums for managed platforms, you can turn a single Linode into a private “git push to deploy” engine. It automatically handles Docker engines, reverse proxies (like Traefik), and auto-renews Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates for all your subdomains.

2. A Real-Time Push Notification Server (
ntfy
)

The Project: Host a self-hosted ntfy instance.

Why do it: Instead of depending on Firebase or Apple Push Notification services (which profile data and can limit throughput), you can use Linode’s low-latency network to pipe terminal commands, script alerts, or home automation updates directly to your phone via a simple PUT/POST Webhook request.

3. A Multi-Region Kubernetes Cluster

The Project: Deploy a containerized microservices application using Linode Kubernetes Engine (LKE).

Why do it: LKE is one of the easiest managed Kubernetes platforms to wrap your head around. You can provision high-availability worker nodes across different Akamai data centers, utilize Linode NodeBalancers to distribute traffic, and handle persistent volume storage effortlessly.

4. Your Own Decentralized Netflix (Plex / Jellyfin)

The Project: Set up a Jellyfin or Plex media server hooked up to Linode Object Storage.

Why do it: Instead of maxing out your home server’s upload bandwidth, you can take advantage of Linode’s massive network pipe to stream music, home videos, and media flawlessly. Pairing it with S3-compatible Object Storage gives you virtually infinite, scalable room for high-fidelity libraries.

5. Private Cloud Storage Ecosystem (Nextcloud)

The Project: Run a Nextcloud Hub instance.

Why do it: Take back your data from Google Drive and iCloud. Nextcloud on a Dedicated CPU Linode gives you blazing-fast file synchronization, collaborative text document editing, password management, and contact syncing, completely owned and controlled by you.

As you can see above – there are many projects that hosting in Linode is perfect for.

In regards to doing projects like this – I give God the glory for the work that he has allowed me to do, I’m not going to take credit for gifts that were given to me. The reason I’m saying this is that sometimes people are amazed at what I can do, but honestly; those are usually the simplest things required of me – the really difficult things are much, much harder and more complicated, most people would get a headache just looking at it.

From an intelligence perspective, I’m actually not very bright, usually even what is straight forward to someone else, a social cue that is supposed to mean something – like yeah go ahead or no, not interested – is completely lost on me. I can’t understand that language, I’m like captain obvious – its got to be in big letters with flashing neon or I’ll it probably go right over my head.🤯

See – the fact that God used a dummy like me to accomplish the things I have accomplished proves there is a God, in God’s hands, the simplest tool can be made into something unrecognizable from its original form.🪽

I can’t stand it when people are arrogant about themselves, I’m telling you straight away that I’m a dummy, but I’m a dummy who believes in the most high God and what he can do through us.

When using a Linode, you get access to metrics, networking, storage, config, backups (cost is extra), and more… below is a screenshot of some of the reporting accessible from the dashboard.

You can also configure firewalls on the VM’s, etc. Another great thing is that that is a deluge of videos on YouTube regarding Linode… you can choose the region where the VM should be hosted, and all the details relevant to its operation.

I don’t have to worry about hosting servers in my own house like I used too, now I can let a really great cloud provider do all the heavy lifting and I’m fine with that.

Jason

So I’ve been working with Linode for some time… Linode is a cloud computing provider.
