Eight players from La Broquerie have earned the prestigious opportunity to represent the province of Manitoba on the national stage after earning qualifying spots at the upcoming PGA Scramble National Final. The local competitors earned their tickets to the championship following high-stakes action at the Manitoba regional qualifier, which was hosted at Pine Ridge Golf Course on August 12. Having proven their skills against top provincial competition, the golfers are now set to travel to Nova Scotia this fall to play at Cabot Links Golf Course, one of the most celebrated golf destinations in Canada.

The contingent from La Broquerie qualified through two distinct local paths before converging at Pine Ridge Golf Course. One squad advanced through a local qualifier held at Quarry Oaks Golf Course, while another team secured their spot through a local qualifier at Carman Golf Course. Both teams ultimately delivered standout performances at the regional level to earn their trips to the National Final.

Low Gross Champions Clinch National Final Spot with Final-Hole Eagle

The team that posted the low gross score at the regional qualifier featured Paul Gauthier, Leo Laramee, Steve Hildebrand, Mitch Tetrault, and PGA Professional Elijah Durksen. Having originally earned their entry into the regional stage through the local qualifier at Quarry Oaks Golf Course, the squad demonstrated incredible skill and composure throughout their round at Pine Ridge Golf Course.

Their victory was capped off by a dramatic, high-pressure finish on their final hole. The Quarry Oaks team sunk an impressive 22-foot eagle putt on the final hole they played, a spectacular shot that secured the low gross title and officially clinched their berth in the PGA Scramble National Final.

Speaking after the thrilling finish, team member Steve Hildebrand expressed the group’s excitement about heading to Nova Scotia. ‘It’s still hard to believe, and our entire team is incredibly excited for the opportunity to attend the National Final,’ Hildebrand told the PGA Scramble. ‘None of us have ever been to Cabot before, which makes the experience even more special. Beyond the competition, we’re excited to take in the entire experience, enjoy the incredible setting, and make some great memories together as a team.’

Six-Eagle Performance Powers Low Net Team to Championship Berth

In addition to the low gross victory, another group representing La Broquerie earned their ticket to the National Final by claiming the tournament’s low net title. The team of Rejean Carrière, Derrek Funk, Claude St. Hilaire, Alain Beauchamp, and PGA Professional Colwyn Abgrall captured top net honours after advancing from their local qualifier at Carman Golf Course.

The Carman team put together a remarkable round of golf at Pine Ridge Golf Course, playing consistently well throughout the entire day. They repeatedly capitalized on scoring opportunities across the course, taking advantage of scoring holes to post an eye-popping total of six eagles during their round. That offensive output paced the field and secured their low net victory.

Team member Claude St. Hilaire shared the excitement felt by the squad as they prepare for the national stage. ‘We’re extremely excited to attend the National Final,’ St Hilaire said. ‘Our PGA Pro has been before and said it’s truly a trip of a lifetime. Given our love for the game of golf and everything we’ve heard about the course, we’re looking forward to playing one of the nicest golf courses in the world, taking in the scenery, and meeting the other teams.’

Understanding the Format: Local Qualifiers versus Regional and National Play

The journey to the PGA Scramble National Final involves adapting to distinct competition rules as teams advance through each stage. The initial local qualifiers are played under a traditional scramble format. In this traditional arrangement, every player on the team gets a chance to hit a shot on every single hole. Furthermore, team strategy comes into play regarding tee shots, as rules specify that each member of a team must contribute three tee shots across the 18-hole round.

However, when teams transition to the regional and national finals, the rules shift to the elimination scramble format. This adjustment adds a unique layer of tactical challenge. Under the elimination scramble rules, whichever player contributes a shot for a hole is eliminated from hitting another shot until the ball is placed on the green. This format requires teams to manage player availability carefully on every hole as they navigate the course.
