The Senior Carillon Sultans experienced an agonizingly narrow finish to their playoff campaign in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League, falling just short of a berth in the league finals after dropping back-to-back decisions against the Elmwood Giants. After taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three semi-final series, Carillon had significant opportunities to close out the series and secure their spot in the championship round. However, Elmwood executed dramatic comebacks in both games to eliminate the Sultans and advance to the finals.

Heartbreak on the Diamond in Semi-Final Action

The semi-final matchup opened with Carillon striking first to take a 1-0 series advantage over Elmwood. With momentum on their side, the Sultans entered game two at home with a chance to wrap up the series. During game two, Carillon built impressive leads, going up 6-0 in the bottom of the second inning and expanding their margin to 9-3 in the bottom of the eighth. However, the Giants mounted a massive rally, fueled by an eight-run top of the fifth inning to secure the victory and force a deciding game three.

The series moved back to Elmwood on August 17 for the winner-take-all game three. Carillon once again put themselves in position to win, taking a lead into extra innings. With two outs and the bases loaded in the extra frame, Elmwood delivered a game-winning single that brought in two runs, giving the Giants a 6-5 walk-off victory and eliminating the Sultans.

Speaking a day after the game three defeat, Carillon manager Nick Wall expressed the team’s disappointment following the tight finish. ‘It was a tough loss,’ Wall said.

The postseason struggle came after a challenging regular season for Carillon, during which they recorded a combined 2-10 mark against Elmwood and West Winnipeg. Despite those regular season results, Wall noted that when the Sultans were operating at full strength, they were on par with the league’s top two teams, who both finished tied for first place in the standings with identical 19-4 records.

‘When we had everybody, we felt like we were the better team for the first time we’ve played (Elmwood) in all these years,’ Wall stated. ‘This was the first year where I was like, “man, we should have beat these guys.”’

With the semi-final victory complete, Elmwood now advances to face top-seeded West Winnipeg in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League finals.

A.D. Penner Park Hosts Historic Postseason Game

Despite the tough series loss, the semi-final series featured a major benchmark for the Carillon program. Game two was hosted at A.D. Penner Park on August 12, marking only the second home playoff game in program history and the program’s first-ever weekday home playoff game.

Under Winnipeg Senior Baseball League regulations, playoff games are required to be held at facilities featuring field lights. Because A.D. Penner Park does not have lights, hosting the playoff matchup in Steinbach required a special arrangement. Elmwood agreed to an earlier start time, allowing the contest to be played in Steinbach before nightfall.

Manager Nick Wall was careful to extend appreciation to Elmwood for making the early start time work so Steinbach could host a playoff contest. Wall highlighted the impact of playing in front of a home crowd and what it demonstrated for the franchise moving forward.

‘It’s such an awesome time being able to actually host in Steinbach,’ Wall said. ‘Guys get way more excited for those games. It just proves what could potentially happen if we do get lights.’

Springfield Braves Sweep B-Pool Championship

While the A-Pool action provided high drama, the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League B-Pool finals were dominated by the Springfield Braves, who swept South Winnipeg 3-0 in their best-of-five series to claim the league title.

In game one, Springfield found themselves trailing 5-2 in the middle of the fifth inning. However, the Braves staged a fierce response, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning on their way to a 9-5 comeback victory.

Springfield extended their control in game two behind a complete-game performance on the mound by Brody Welsh. Welsh struck out six batters while allowing just a single run in an 8-1 triumph.

The Braves closed out the championship sweep on August 17 in Winnipeg with a 5-0 victory. James Walker turned in a complete-game performance on the mound for Springfield, allowing just five hits and five walks to lock down the shutout win and secure the B-Pool championship.
