Port Haven (S1:E7) — Shattered Currents

Port Haven S1E7 — Port Haven — Season 1, Episode 7

The silence in the grand parlor of Hartwell Manor was heavier than the ocean fog clinging to the windowpanes. Victoria turned the worn, leather-bound logbook toward Marcus Kane, her cold fingers resting on a line of dark, flowing script near the bottom of the page.

Marcus stepped forward, his boots heavy against the rug. He looked down, his jaw tight as his hazel eyes scanned the hand-written entry dated six years prior.

*’To protect the estate from total ruin, I did what was required,’* the passage read in Thomas Hartwell’s unmistakable hand. *’I severed the stern lines of the Kane flagship before the tide turned. May God forgive me for leaving Jonathan’s vessel to the mercy of the gale.’*

Marcus’s chest heaved. The color drained from his weathered face, replaced by a dark, terrifying stillness. He slowly turned his gaze from the book to Thomas, who stood motionless by the grand hearth, his head bowed under the weight of the shadow he had carried for six years.

“Marcus…” Thomas began, his voice breaking with a gravelly, desperate tremor. “It wasn’t what it seems. Victoria’s investors had leveraged my debts. They threatened to burn every shanty on Pier 4 if I didn’t give them a reason to declare total loss on the harbor assets. I thought Jonathan would stay in the lee of the bay… I never knew he would sail straight into Devil’s Tooth.”

“You cut his lines,” Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. The pain in his eyes cut deeper than any blade. He turned slowly toward Elena, searching her face with a look of profound, agonizing betrayal. “Did you know about this? Is this why you brought me up here? To offer me a piece of paper while your father hid the truth of my father’s death?”

“No! Marcus, I swear to you, I didn’t know!” Elena pleaded, reaching for his arm. Her heart slammed against her ribs as her hands caught only the wet wool of his sleeve before he yanked his arm back, retreating from her touch as if it burned.

“Stay away from me, Elena,” Marcus growled, stepping backward toward the open parlor doors. “Stay away from me and your family.”

Without another word, Marcus turned and plunged into the damp, dark hallway, the front doors slamming behind him with a crash that echoed through the high-ceilinged mansion.

“Marcus!” Elena shouted, ignoring her aunt’s sharp reprimand as she bolted after him into the storm.

The coastal rain lashed against her skin, freezing and relentless, as she scrambled down the slippery cobblestone path toward Pier 4. The ocean roared below, black water smashing against the granite cliffs. The fog had thinned just enough for her to see Marcus sprinting along the slick timber decking of the pier toward his vessel, the *Sea Star*.

“Marcus, please, stop!” Elena cried out, her breath ragged, salt spray stinging her eyes. She caught up to him at the gangway, grabbing the iron railing to block his path.

Marcus spun on her, his face gleaming with rain and tears. “What is there left to say, Elena? My father drowned six feet below where we’re standing because your father cared more about his land than a man’s life! And all this time, I thought Thomas Hartwell was a saint who stood up for the working men of Port Haven.”

“He was wrong! He made a terrible, unforgivable choice!” Elena yelled over the thunder of the surf. “But I am not my father, Marcus! And I am not Victoria! Everything I’ve done since I came back to Port Haven—everything I’ve felt… it was real. I am fighting for you. For this harbor.”

Marcus looked down at her, his expression a tortured storm of rage and undeniable grief. For a lingering, breathless second, the raw heat between them flared beneath the cold rain, a agonizing echo of the bond they had forged over ancient maps and shared secrets.

“It doesn’t matter,” Marcus whispered, his voice cracking against the wind. “The Hartwells bring nothing but ruin to my family.”

Before Elena could answer, the sharp, wailing blare of a municipal siren echoed down from the ridge road above the harbor. Red and blue emergency lights sliced through the curtain of fog, illuminating the gravel turnaround above Pier 4.

Two town sheriff cruisers screeched to a halt, followed immediately by James Thornton’s black sedan. James sprang from his car, sprinting down the wooden steps toward the docks, his coat flying behind him.

“Elena! Marcus!” James called out urgently, his voice panicked as Sheriff Vance stepped out of the patrol car, drawing an official warrant from his breast pocket.

“Elena, get back from the docks,” James gasped, reaching her side and taking her arm. “Victoria didn’t just show you that logbook to hurt Marcus. She submitted the signed confession to the county prosecutor ten minutes ago.”

Elena stared at James in horror. “What?”

“She swore out a warrant for grand sabotage and second-degree manslaughter against your father,” James said, his eyes darting toward the manor towering above them on the cliff. “And because Thomas named Marcus’s father as the victim, the court has placed an immediate asset freeze and seizure order on Pier 4 to satisfy the pending civil liabilities.”

Elena’s blood ran cold as Sheriff Vance stepped onto the pier, flanked by two armed deputies. “Thomas Hartwell!” the Sheriff’s megaphone boomed across the harbor. “Surrender yourself peacefully!”

Marcus stared at the officers, then at the legal seizure notice in the Sheriff’s hand. A harsh, bitter smile touched his lips as he stepped onto the deck of the *Sea Star* and unhitched the primary bow line.
