Port Haven — Season 1, Episode 4

Morning arrived in Port Haven draped in a soft blanket of coastal fog. Inside the warm, cedar-paneled interior of the Anchor & Mug Cafe, the rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee and Lily Chen’s fresh blueberry scones filled the air. Elena Hartwell sat at a corner booth, her fingers wrapped around a steaming ceramic mug as she recounted the previous evening’s revelations to her closest friend.

“Marcus wasn’t lying,” Elena said quietly, leaning across the table. “My father didn’t just know him. They had a signed agreement regarding the harbor parcel—a partnership that Victoria spent ten years trying to erase.”

Lily paused while wiping down the neighboring table, her dark eyes wide with concern. “Elena, if your father gave Marcus a share in that property, Victoria’s plan to sell the waterfront to commercial developers is completely invalid. But you have to be careful. Your aunt didn’t maintain her position in this town by playing fair.”

Before Elena could answer, the brass bell above the door chimed softly. James Thornton walked in, wearing his customary tailored wool coat, looking every bit the rising local politician. His eyes swept the room and instantly locked onto Elena. For a fleeting second, the years seemed to melt away, replaced by the unspoken warmth of their high school days before life—and James’s engagement to Chloe—had drawn a firm line between them.

“Morning, Lily. Elena,” James said, stepping toward their table. He offered a gentle smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, which were shadowed with worry. “I saw your car outside. Elena, can we talk for a moment? Privately?”

Lily gave Elena a supportive nod and discreetly slipped into the kitchen. James took a seat opposite Elena, resting his hands on the table.

“I heard you were down at the docks late yesterday with Marcus Kane,” James began, his voice lowered. “Elena, I know you’re looking for answers about your father’s estate, but Marcus is… complicated. He keeps to himself for a reason. Getting mixed up with him could ruin whatever leverage you have with Victoria.”

Elena felt a flicker of frustration, tempered by the undeniable spark of nostalgia that always accompanied James’s presence. “Marcus isn’t the threat here, James. He honored my father’s wishes when no one else would. Why does everyone in Port Haven treat him like an outsider?”

“Because he doesn’t play by the town council’s rules,” James replied earnestly, reaching out as if to touch her hand before hesitating and pulling back. “I just don’t want to see you get hurt. Port Haven isn’t the same place you left ten years ago.”

“Neither am I,” Elena said softly, holding his gaze until James looked away, visibly torn between his lingering affection for her and his current obligations.

An hour later, Elena walked down to Pier 4, where the wooden planks were slick with salt spray. Marcus Kane’s fishing vessel, the *Sea Star*, swayed gently against its moorings. Marcus was on deck, expertly coiling heavy yellow hawser rope. When he looked up and saw Elena, he paused, wiping his hands on a blue work rag.

“I didn’t expect to see you back so soon, Miss Hartwell,” Marcus said, his voice deep and steady against the rhythmic lap of the tide.

“I need to see the proof, Marcus,” Elena called up to him. “If my father truly protected your family’s dock rights, there has to be a physical record.”

Marcus studied her for a long moment before gesturing toward the wheelhouse. “Come aboard.”

Elena stepped carefully onto the boat. Inside the compact, tidy wheelhouse, surrounded by brass instruments and charts of the coastline, Marcus unlocked a small iron-bound cedar box. From inside, he drew out a yellowed document bearing the raised seal of Port Haven and her father’s distinctive, flowing signature.

As Marcus handed her the paper, their fingers brushed. A sudden, quiet stillness settled between them, charged with an unexpected warmth that made Elena’s breath catch. Marcus didn’t pull away immediately; his steady gray eyes searched hers with a intensity that felt both protective and deeply guarded.

“Thomas signed this two months before he passed,” Marcus explained softly, his voice near her ear. “He wanted to make sure the historical docks remained community property, safe from Victoria’s commercial expansion.”

Elena scanned the document, her heart pounding as she recognized her father’s handwriting. “This changes everything. Victoria can’t sell the manor’s coastal acreage without your consent.”

Armed with the document copy, Elena returned to Hartwell Manor, determined to end her aunt’s quiet tyranny. She found Victoria sitting in the sunlit parlor, sipping tea from fine china while reviewing stack of legal documents.

“Aunt Victoria,” Elena said, stepping into the room with steady confidence. “We need to talk about Father’s estate and the partnership agreement he signed with Marcus Kane.”

Victoria carefully set her teacup down on the saucer with a soft click. She didn’t look surprised; instead, a cold, calculated smile touched her lips.

“Ah, yes. Captain Kane’s little piece of paper,” Victoria said smoothly, rising from her chair. “I wondered how long it would take him to pull you into his desperate little fantasy.”

“It’s not a fantasy. It’s a legally binding agreement,” Elena insisted, holding up the document.

“It *was* binding, my dear,” Victoria corrected, taking a step closer. “Until yesterday afternoon, when I exercised the contingency clause your late father granted me as executor during his illness.”

Before Elena could process the words, the front door opened, and James Thornton stepped into the foyer, carrying an official leather portfolio. He looked pale, avoiding Elena’s shocked gaze as Victoria gestured toward him with triumph.
