Port Haven — Season 1, Episode 3

Morning broke over Port Haven in ribbons of pale gold and slate grey, scattering the lingering coastal fog across the harbor. Inside The Driftwood Cup, the comforting aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans and dark mahogany filled the air. Elena Hartwell sat at a corner table near the bay window, a warm ceramic mug cradled in her hands as she stared at the notes she had scribbled late the previous night.

Lily Chen set a warm, glaze-drizzled cinnamon pastry onto the table with a reassuring smile. “You look like you haven’t slept a wink, Elena. Still piecing together that deed you found in Thomas’s desk?”

“It’s more than just a deed, Lily,” Elena said softly, glancing toward the window where the fishing boats bobbed in the rising tide. “Yesterday at the docks, I found harbor records linking Marcus Kane to my father’s estate. His name was listed right next to my father’s signature on a dockland lease dated twenty years ago. Why would a boat captain hold an interest in Hartwell Manor?”

Before Lily could reply, the bell above the café door chimed. James Thornton walked in, dressed in his tailored coat, carrying a briefcase. His eyes swept the room and instantly locked onto Elena. For a fleeting second, the polished, professional mask he usually wore slipped, revealing the boy who had loved her a decade ago. But as he stepped closer, the glint of sunlight off his silver watch served as a quiet reminder of his upcoming wedding to the mayor’s daughter.

“Morning, Lily. Elena,” James said, stopping beside her table. His voice was warm, tinged with a familiar softness. “I heard you were down at the slips yesterday asking about Marcus Kane. Elena, you need to be careful. Victoria came by my office this morning, demanding to know if you were attempting to alter the estate probate.”

Elena met his steady gaze, feeling a familiar flutter of bittersweet memory. “Aunt Victoria is hiding something, James. My father didn’t leave this town in debt—he left behind a puzzle. And I intend to solve it.”

James reached out, his hand hovering over hers for a delicate beat before he caught himself and rested his palm on the back of her chair instead. “Just promise me you won’t get caught in the middle of whatever grudge exists between Victoria and Marcus. Marcus is… complicated. He doesn’t open up easily.”

An hour later, Elena walked along the creaking wooden planks of Slip 14. The salt air whipped her hair across her cheeks as she approached *The Wanderer*, a handsome, weathered trawler undergoing repairs. Marcus Kane was on the deck, coiling heavy marine rope. His dark hair was windblown, his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearm tattoos of vintage compass rose markings.

He paused as her footsteps echoed on the deck boards, turning to face her. His hazel eyes were guarded, yet entirely focused on her.

“Miss Hartwell,” Marcus said, his voice deep and calm over the cries of the gulls overhead. “I figured you’d come looking for me eventually.”

“You knew my father,” Elena said, stepping closer to the gunwale. “Your name is on his harbor filings, Marcus. Aunt Victoria acts as if your family doesn’t exist, but the town records say otherwise. What did Thomas Hartwell owe you?”

Marcus set the heavy coil of rope down and wiped his hands on a blue shop rag. He stepped to the edge of the boat, bringing him eye-to-eye with Elena. Up close, the intensity of his gaze was electric, grounded in a quiet strength that made Elena’s breath catch.

“Your father was a good man, Elena. A man of his word,” Marcus said quietly, his tone laced with genuine respect. “Twenty years ago, when the storm wrecked my grandfather’s fleet, your father used Hartwell Manor as collateral to keep our family business afloat. In return, my father gave him co-ownership of the harbor ridge. But your Aunt Victoria tried to erase that contract the moment your father took ill.”

Elena stared at him, stunned. “Co-ownership? That means…”

“It means half of the cliffside property doesn’t belong to the Hartwell estate alone,” Marcus replied gently. “It belongs to me.”

That evening, thunder rumbled across the ocean as a spring storm rolled into Port Haven. Elena stood in the grand study of Hartwell Manor, surrounded by oil paintings of her ancestors. The heavy oak door swung open, and Aunt Victoria marched into the room, her silhouette rigid against the dim hall light.

“You’ve been talking to the Kane boy,” Victoria accused, her voice cold as ice. She crossed the oriental rug, her heels clicking sharply. “I warned you, Elena. You come back here after ten years, stirring up dirt that was meant to stay buried. You know nothing about the agreements made in this house.”

“I know father trusted the Kanes!” Elena countered, standing her ground beside her father’s roll-top desk. “I know you’ve been trying to force a sale of the harbor ridge before I could find the truth!”

“I have been protecting this family from ruin!” Victoria snapped, her eyes flashing. “Marcus Kane is not a savior, Elena. He carries secrets that would tear this town apart!”

Leaving Victoria in the parlor, Elena hurried up the narrow spiral staircase to the manor’s third-floor library, driven by Marcus’s revelation. She approached the old grandfather clock in the corner—a piece her father had spent hours repairing when she was a child. Remembering a small brass key Marcus had handed her at the docks with the words *’Look where the time stands still’*, Elena opened the clock’s glass face and set the hands to 3:15—the exact time listed on the original harbor deed.

A subtle wooden latch clicked open inside the hollow base of the clock.

Elena reaches into the hidden compartment and pulls out a sealed leather ledger, but as she opens the first page, she gasps: glued inside is a faded photograph of Marcus Kane’s father standing beside Thomas Hartwell, holding a signed document—and written underneath in her father’s handwriting are the words: ‘In the event of my death, Hartwell Manor must be surrendered to Marcus.’ Before Elena can process the words, a heavy shadow falls across the floor as Aunt Victoria steps into the room behind her, holding a pair of heavy brass shears.
