Port Haven (S1:E8) — Shadows of Devil’s Tooth

Port Haven S1E8 — Port Haven — Season 1, Episode 8

The *Sea Star*’s heavy diesel engine roared like a wounded beast, churning the ink-black waters of the harbor into a violent, white-capped froth. Elena screamed Marcus’s name into the tempest, but the roar of the gale swallowed her voice whole. The boat’s red stern light flickered once through the dense, milky wall of fog before vanishing entirely, setting a blind, suicidal course toward the razor-sharp granite spikes of Devil’s Tooth reef.

On the rain-slicked planks of Pier 4, Sheriff Vance forced Thomas Hartwell’s hands behind his back, the heavy metallic click of handcuffs echoing above the ocean surge. “Thomas Hartwell, you are under arrest for sabotage and second-degree manslaughter,” Vance shouted over the howling wind, pulling the weathered captain toward the waiting squad car.

Thomas didn’t resist. As the deputies dragged him up the wooden ramp, he turned his head, his silver-grey eyes locking onto Elena with frantic intensity. “The inner lining of my coat, Elena!” Thomas shouted, his voice raw and gravelly against the storm. “The true conveyance! I executed an unrecorded deed with Jonathan before the wreck—Marcus isn’t just the harbor master, he’s the rightful co-owner of Hartwell Manor! Victoria doctored the logbook page!”

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. She spun around and lunged toward the wooden dock bench where her father’s heavy wool coat lay drenched in seawater. Her cold, trembling fingers plunged inside the frayed lining near the hem, brushing against a firm, waterproof oilskin pouch.

She tore the binding open with her teeth. Inside was an unrecorded land deed dated seven years prior, stamped with an official territorial seal and signed by both Thomas Hartwell and Jonathan Kane. It legally conveyed half-ownership of Hartwell Manor directly to the Kane family. Thomas hadn’t cut the lines six years ago to destroy Jonathan; he had cut the lines to free Jonathan’s vessel from Victoria’s paid mercenaries who were burning the docks, trying to force Jonathan to flee the harbor before the deed could be recorded at the county seat.

“Elena!” James Thornton skidded to a halt beside her, his tailored coat soaked through, his face pale with horror as he stared out into the pitch-black bay. “Marcus is running at fifteen knots into a gale-force tide. The current off the point will drag him directly into the inner reef. He won’t survive five minutes out there.”

“We have to go after him,” Elena said, her voice dropping all hesitation as she pressed the oilskin deed against her chest. She looked up into James’s pained, remorseful eyes. “Can your firm’s boat handle those swells?”

James’s jaw tightened with sudden, fierce resolve. “The *Titan* is tied up at Pier 2. Twin diesels. Let’s go.”

Minutes later, the twin six-hundred-horsepower engines of the Thornton firm’s offshore cutter thrummed into life, sending vibrations shuddering through the deck plates. James slammed the throttles forward, driving the bow directly into six-foot crashing swells that slammed against the reinforced hull, spraying freezing saltwater across the wheelhouse windows.

Elena stood at the helm beside him, her knuckles white as she operated the high-intensity marine spotlight. She swept the brilliant beam of white light back and forth across the churning black abyss of the Pacific. The automated foghorn at Devil’s Tooth lighthouse blared every twelve seconds, a mournful groan echoing off the granite cliffs.

“There!” Elena shouted, leaning against the glass.

Three hundred yards ahead, the spotlight beam caught the wild, pitching silhouette of the *Sea Star*. It was trapped in the violent undertow, listing heavily as white surf exploded against the jagged granite pinnacles surrounding the reef.

Elena grabbed the vessel’s marine radio microphone, her hands shaking. “Marcus! Turn back!” she pleaded, her voice crackling across the open emergency channel. “Marcus, listen to me! My father didn’t murder your father! I have the unrecorded deed—you own half of Hartwell Manor! Victoria set both our families up!”

Through the rain-streaked glass, Elena saw Marcus standing at the open stern controls of his vessel, his wet hair plastered across his forehead as he turned toward the blinding spotlamp. For a terrifying, breathless second, hesitation caught him—his hand hovering over the throttle.

Then, a massive rogue wave crested over the outer ridge of Devil’s Tooth. The mountain of black water lifted the *Sea Star* and slammed it sideways into the submerged rock shelf with a deafening screech of splintering fiberglass and tearing metal.

“Marcus!” Elena screamed as the *Sea Star* listed violently, trapped on the reef.

James leaned into the cutter’s wheel, steadying the vessel in the roaring gale. As he swung the cutter around to launch a rescue line, the high-powered spotlight beam swept past Marcus’s wrecked boat—illuminating the shadowed, narrow cove hidden directly behind Devil’s Tooth reef.

Sitting anchored silently in the restricted, violent waters of the cove was an unmarked industrial dredging barge. Heavy cranes dripped with ocean silt, hauling fresh granite and iron cases from a deep trench in the sea floor—and painted clearly across the barge’s stern was the corporate insignia of Thornton & Sons.
