Port Haven (S1:E10) — Ashes on the Water

Port Haven S1E10 — Port Haven — Season 1, Episode 10

The harbor basin burned like a sunken pit of hell. Orange fire reflected off the churning black tides as the Titan sliced through the breakwater, its twin diesels screaming in protest. High above on the granite bluff, Hartwell Manor was swallowed by a roaring crown of flames, its centuries-old heartwood timbers crackling like musketry against the howling coastal gale.

Down below on the slick timber planks of Pier 4, Victoria Hartwell stood motionless against the gale. The blinding glare of the blaze illuminated her sharp, icy profile as she held a flickering road flare inches from the open storm shutter of the Port Haven Municipal Registry—the wooden annex where every land grant, tax assessment, and deed since 1840 was archived.

“Victoria, stop!” Elena’s voice tore through the roar of the fire as the Titan slammed against the dock pilings with a brutal crunch of fiberglass.

Before the cutter was even secured, Marcus leapt over the gunwale, his boots skidding across the rain-slicked boardwalk. Elena was right behind him, the waterproof oilskin pouch containing the true deed clutched tightly against her chest.

Victoria turned slowly, the crimson flare casting long, demonic shadows across her face. A cold, chilling laughter escaped her lips. “You’re too late, Marcus. You think a damp scrap of parchment changes anything? The law respects recorded titles, and by midnight, there won’t be a single record left in this town to prove who owned a square inch of Pier 4.”

“It’s over, Victoria!” James shouted, vaulting onto the pier behind Marcus. His face was twisted in agonized betrayal as he stepped between Victoria and the building. “I saw the barge at Devil’s Tooth. I saw what my father was hauling from the wreck. You lied to me—you used my family’s firm to destroy the Kanes and steal the Hartwell line!”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into dark slits, her venom shifting to James. “Your father was a coward who took thirty percent of the offshore permits to keep his mouth shut! He knew as well as I did that if Jonathan Kane’s boundary map reached the county seat, Hartwell Manor would be split in two and Pier 4 would belong to the watermen. I built this town’s legacy with my blood, and I won’t let a Hartwell bastard and a Kane deckhand tear it down!”

With a fierce, sudden sweep of her arm, Victoria hurled the burning flare into the open window of the registry.

Dry canvas ledgers and yellowed map rolls ignited instantly. A wall of heat erupted through the broken frame, sending a cloud of blazing embers flying out into the foggy night air.

“James, get the extinguishers by the fish house!” Marcus barked, charging toward the burning doorway without hesitation. He kicked the heavy oak door open, ducking beneath a wave of suffocating black smoke as he began tearing historic leather binders from the burning shelves. James sprinted after him, grabbing a heavy brass hand pump from the dock rigging.

Elena lunged forward, grabbing Victoria by the wrist before she could melt back into the shadows of the fog-draped alleyways. “Where is my father?” Elena demanded, her eyes blazing with a fury that made Victoria flinch. “Vance arrested him—where did he take him?”

Victoria sneered, her mask of cold aristocracy fracturing into pure, unhinged malice. She leaned close, her breath hot against Elena’s cheek. “You think Vance took him to the county jail? The Sheriff works for Thornton now, my dear. He didn’t lock Thomas in a cell.”

Elena’s heart stopped. She tightened her grip on Victoria’s coat. “What did you do to him?”

Victoria looked up toward the towering cliff, where the grand stained-glass windows of Hartwell Manor were bursting outward in showers of sparkling, fiery rain. “Thomas wanted to save his legacy so badly. So I left him in the lower archive vault beneath the manor. Where he belongs. Locked in with the rest of the family ghosts.”

A sharp gasp escaped Elena’s throat. Up on the ridge road, a terrifying explosion rocked the foundation of the cliff. The east wing of Hartwell Manor buckled, sending an avalanche of burning timber and granite boulders cascading down the access road, completely blocking the overland route to the summit.

Marcus burst out of the smoke-filled registry office, coughing violently, an armful of charred municipal maps tucked beneath his jacket. He took one look at Elena’s stricken, white face and the wall of rock and fire sealing off the road above.

“He’s trapped in the cliff vault, Marcus!” Elena cried, tears cutting clean lines through the soot on her cheeks. “The road is destroyed—there’s no way up from the harbor!”

Marcus looked up at the sheer, vertical face of the granite cliff looming three hundred feet above the crashing surf, then at the burning ruins of the house where his father’s secrets had been buried for a generation. His jaw set into a hard, unyielding line.

“There is one way,” Marcus said, his hazel eyes locking onto Elena with fierce, terrifying resolve as he pointed toward the sea caves churning beneath the cliff face. “The tide-tunnel beneath Devil’s Point. But if the tide turns before we reach the vault, the ocean will seal the entrance forever.”
