Port Haven (S1:E9) — Unburied Currents
Port Haven S1E9 — Port Haven — Season 1, Episode 9
The thunderous crash of six-foot swells against the granite teeth of the reef echoed like cannon fire through the night. Sprays of icy seawater slammed against the wheelhouse of the *Titan*, but James Thornton couldn’t move his hands from the throttle. His face was ghastly pale in the green glow of the instrument panel, his eyes wide with horror as he stared at the corporate insignia painted across the side of the industrial dredging barge.
“James!” Elena shouted, her voice cutting through the howl of the storm. “Hold us steady! Marcus is going under!”
James swallowed hard, his knuckles white against the stainless steel wheel. “Elena, I swear to God… I didn’t know about this. My father told me Thornton & Sons abandoned all deep-water salvage permits off Devil’s Tooth five years ago.”
“We talk about your father later!” Elena snapped, throwing open the wheelhouse door and stepping out onto the slippery, rain-drenched deck.
Fifty yards away, the *Sea Star* was listing at a fatal forty-five-degree angle, its fiberglass hull groaning as the jagged rocks tore through its port side. Marcus stood braced against the shattered wheelhouse frame, blood trickling from a sharp gash above his left eye, his dark hair plastered against his skin.
Elena hauled the heavy orange life ring from the *Titan*’s gunwale, coiled the line in her trembling hands, and leaned over the railing. “Marcus! Grab the line!”
Marcus looked across the boiling black gap between the two boats. The pain in his hazel eyes was no longer just the sting of salt spray—it was the raw, open wound of a betrayal he had carried across the waves. But as a massive surge slammed the *Sea Star* deeper into the reef, the instinct to survive took over. He lunged over the shattered rail, throwing himself into the churning abyss.
“I’ve got him!” James yelled, rushing out to help pull the heavy line.
Together, straining against the ocean’s violent drag, Elena and James hauled Marcus up the rope ladder onto the cutter’s deck. Marcus collapsed against the deck plates, coughing up seawater, his chest heaving under his wet wool sweater.
Elena dropped to her knees beside him, wrapping her coat around his shivering shoulders. “Marcus… look at me. Please.”
Marcus pushed himself up against the deck locker, his breathing ragged as he looked at her. “Your father… the logbook…”
“It was tampered with,” Elena begged, her fingers digging into his arms as she pulled the waterproof oilskin pouch from her pocket and pressed it into his slick, cold hands. “Look inside. My father hid this in the lining of his coat before Vance arrested him.”
With shaking fingers, Marcus unsealed the parchment. The yellowed beam of the deck light illuminated the elegant copperplate script: *1895 Territorial Land Deed — Hartwell Manor & Pier 4, Jointly Conveyed to Jonathan Kane and Thomas Hartwell.*
Marcus stared at his father’s bold, familiar signature at the bottom of the page. The truth washed over him like a warm tide against the freezing gale. “He… he didn’t murder my father,” Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. “They owned it together.”
“Victoria altered the logbook page to make it look like a confession,” Elena said, tears streaming down her rain-slicked cheeks. “She needed you to hate my father so you wouldn’t question who really profited from the wreck six years ago.”
Marcus slowly turned his gaze toward the dark cove behind the reef, where the Thornton & Sons dredging barge sat anchored in the shadows. High-powered halogen lights flickered along the barge’s crane boom, which was currently lowering a rusted, iron-bound trunk from the depths of the submerged canyon.
“The Kane family crest,” Marcus breathed, pointing a trembling finger toward the crane’s steel cage. “That’s my grandfather’s ship’s safe. It was on the flagship when it sank. Victoria and Thornton & Sons weren’t just trying to seize Pier 4—they’ve been secretly mining the wreck site for the original territorial boundary maps.”
James stepped back, taking a horrified step away from the railing. “My father didn’t just back Victoria’s real estate deal… he orchestrated the wreck. He wanted those maps buried so Thornton & Sons could claim the entire Pacific shoreline.”
Before James could say another word, a sharp, spotlight beam blinded the wheelhouse of the *Titan*. A booming loudspeaker cut through the roar of the gale from the deck of the dredging barge.
“Cutter *Titan*, this is private security. You are trespassing in a restricted maritime zone. Stand down and prepare to be boarded!”
James’s jaw hardened with sudden, fierce determination. He bolted back into the wheelhouse and slammed both throttles to full power. “Not tonight,” James muttered through grit teeth as the twin diesels roared, spinning the cutter on a dime and shooting away from the reef toward the faint amber lights of Port Haven harbor.
