Port Haven (S1:E11) — Beneath the Burning Bluff
Port Haven S1E11 — Port Haven — Season 1, Episode 11
The sea cave swallowed them whole in pitch blackness, punctuated only by the suffocating heat filtering down through stone fissures from the burning manor above. Burning embers fell through the ceiling cracks like red snow, hissing softly as they struck the surging, chest-deep ocean water.
Elena shivered violently, her boots fighting for traction on the algae-slicked floor of the tide-tunnel. Ahead, Marcus cleared a path through floating driftwood, his arm linked firmly around her waist to anchor her against the fierce undertow. In the narrow cavern, the roar of the surf outside blended with the deep, sickening groan of Hartwell Manor’s dying timber frame high on the cliff above.
“Hold onto me,” Marcus urged, his voice low against her ear. His breath was warm against her ice-cold cheek, his hazel eyes fierce in the dim crimson light filtering through the rock. “The high tide is cresting. We have ten minutes before the sea seals the mouth of this passage.”
“My father’s right above us,” Elena said, her jaw tight as she squeezed his soaked forearm. “We’re not leaving without him, Marcus. Not after everything.”
Marcus’s hand tightened around hers—a silent, immovable vow forged in the icy brine. “We bring him out together.”
They pressed deeper into the narrow granite throat of the cavern, where the water deepened to their chests. But as Marcus raised his high-powered waterproof torch to light the stone staircase leading up to the lower vault, a harsh metallic click echoed off the subterranean walls.
“That’s far enough, Kane.”
The yellow beam of the flashlight illuminated Sheriff Vance standing ten feet above them on a narrow granite ledge. His uniform was torn, his broad face drenched in salt spray, and his service revolver was aimed squarely at Marcus’s chest.
“Vance,” Elena gasped, her voice echoing off the wet ceiling. “Put the gun down! Victoria locked my father in the vault to die!”
“I know where Thomas is, Elena,” Vance said quietly, his voice lacking its usual boisterous authority, replaced instead by a cold, desperate exhaustion. “And that’s where he has to stay. If Thomas walks out of this cliff alive with that unrecorded deed, Thornton & Sons goes under—and I go to federal penitentiary for thirty years of falsified police reports.”
“You were my father’s friend!” Elena cried, taking a step forward despite the cold water pulling at her knees. “He trusted you!”
“Your father was an idealist who thought honor paid the bills!” Vance snarled, his hand trembling on the grip of the weapon. “Thornton paid off my mortgage when my wife was sick. He bought this town decades ago. I’m not going to rot in a cell because Thomas Hartwell suddenly grew a conscience!”
“You’re too late, Vance,” Marcus said, stepping slowly between the gun barrel and Elena, his voice calm and deadly. “The registry is burnt. The whole town knows Thornton’s barge is anchored off Devil’s Tooth. It’s over.”
“It’s over when I say—”
A violent, booming shudder rocked the foundations of the cave. High above, another structural beam of Hartwell Manor collapsed, sending a shower of heavy stone and blazing hearthwork crashing down through the ceiling vent. At the exact same instant, the ocean delivered its massive crest: a subterranean tidal wave slammed into the outer cavern with terrifying force.
“Elena, dive!” Marcus shouted, pulling her under the surface just as the torrent exploded into the chamber.
The surging water violently slammed into the granite ledge, washing Vance off his footing with a sudden, choked cry. His gun went skittering into the dark, churning depths below as he was swept backward toward the foaming sea entrance, his hands clawing uselessly at the slick rock before the current dragged him out into the night.
Marcus surfaced, gasping for air, and hauled Elena up by her jacket. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine! Go!” she breathed, wiping water from her eyes.
Together, they scrambled up the flooded stone steps, bursting through a heavy copper-reinforced hatch into the dark, stone-walled sub-basement of the manor. Smoke hung thick and suffocating in the air, and the room baked like an oven from the raging inferno on the floors above.
At the far end of the corridor stood the heavy riveted iron door of the lower archive vault. Heavy pounding rattled the metal from within.
“Elena!” a muffled, gravelly voice cried from inside. “Elena, is that you?”
“Dad!” Elena sprinted across the wet flagstones, throwing her weight against the rusted iron locking bar. Marcus leaned his shoulder into the heavy mechanism beside her, his muscles straining until the heat-warped iron latch gave way with a screech of shearing metal.
The heavy door swung outward. Thomas Hartwell collapsed into his daughter’s arms, coughing violently as he clutched a heavy brass map tube to his chest.
“I have it,” Thomas wheezed, his pale eyes brimming with tears as he looked up at Marcus. “The original territorial charter… signed by your grandfather…”
Marcus knelt to help Thomas to his feet, but his breath caught in his throat as his flashlight beam swept across the interior of the opened vault behind Thomas.
Propped against the rear stone wall of the vault, revealed by the firelight glowing through the shattered overhead beams, sat an old iron cage. Locked inside was a skeletal set of human remains—wearing the gold signet ring of the Kane family line, and clutching a rusted iron dagger buried deep between its ribs.

As Hartwell Manor crumbles overhead, Marcus discovers his father’s skeleton locked inside the secret vault—proving Jonathan Kane didn’t die at sea six years ago, but was murdered and hidden in the Hartwell basement long before the shipwreck. Stay tuned for further updates on Port Haven S1E11.
